I hope Alan realizes that if he actually gets what he wants and push comes to shove, a lot of people will just either abandon the tournament scene entirely or retreat to a private, no-stakes one where no broadcasting or monetization occurs. There's no real version of this where he comes out on top.

Alan is gonna make himself out to be the victim and will cherry pick one or two of the responses online and say “the abuse I’ve been receiving has been making me depressed. I tried so hard to make this the best tournament ever for the community blah blah blah” Because that’s what narcissists do

@Bootleg people are getting better at it. We're always held back by the lowest common denominator, but the common people are finally wising up to this one. That's what I've noticed, anyway - grifters get shut down a lot faster these days and have to innovate to stay ahead. The old "muh depression" isn't working either, now that everybody's depressed. People nowadays start shit and then hit out with Phase 2, the inevitable public apology/explanation, and most people now just hit back with "whatever fool", instead of the old "what a mature thing to do".

I feel like Japanese bureaucracy also had a hand in this. The amount of red tape someone needs to go through to get ANY kind of permission or official approval is mind boggling. From even just getting a bank statement, you need to be prepared to have to talk to managers and their superiors with every single piece of documentation that could be even slightly related. And expect a big fat NO even after going through these ridiculously extensive processes.

      Richard Lee 2 개월 전 +11

Okay, allow me to play Devils Advocate for a moment. Bearing in mind that I don't agree with Nintendo's decision to shutter the event, is the Smash Community specifically a positive for Nintendo?
Any time I hear stories of the Smash 'community' it's almost always in a negative light, whether due to inappropriate behaviour, allegations of misconduct or just some truly toxic behaviour being par for the course. I don't think it'd be surprising if the child-friendly company Nintendo wasn't all too keen on the Smash community to begin with, especially when a significant portion of them openly hammer the most recent iteration in favour of a 20 year old game that's not going to make Nintendo any more money.
With this in mind, take what we know. Nintendo was working with Alan, and it has since come to light that Alan would pass on concerns, possibly falsified, to Nintendo to get his rivals shut down. Imagine he'd levelled an accusation of grooming, the kind of stuff the community is sadly known for. Nintendo do not want to touch that with a ten foot pole; their primary market is kids and parents of kids who wouldn't like the idea of their little Jimmy being contacted by predators while playing a Nintendo game. So, air on the side of caution and shut it all down. Smash has brought terrible PR before, why not again? It even aligns with their tweet, which mentions vague 'Health and Safety' concerns. The safety of minors is something companies are VERY wary about and Nintendo is never going to be explicit about even a potential association with grooming on a public channel, so... Health and Safety it is.
This is just speculation and even if it did happen this way it still sucks, but I don't see it as implausible that a man who we know lied about his competition might have falsified an accusation of misconduct and Nintendo immediately smacked down the entire thing because that kind of thing happens in the Smash Community with WORRYING regularity and they weren't willing to take chances.
In short, the situation sucks and Nintendo didn't handle it well, but I do think the Smash community also likes to assume themselves worthy of the benefit of Nintendo's doubt when their whole brand really doesn't align with Nintendo at all.

But it's crazy how 1 person / one action can ruin so much respect I have for them. It's also important to note: If you want to share your opinion on the matter definitely call Nintendo Support and leave some feedback. Do be nice though, the people that work there do not have any say in these kind of decisions and are fans as well who probably also have opinions on this situation, they just aren't able to say anything because they aren't allowed to. They do take down and pass back feedback though so definitely call if you would like to leave feedback but please be nice to the people you speak to if you do.

As someone who works for one of the most well known apparel companies, I can, with almost certainty, guarantee that the feedback doesn't get passed along. We pretty much have the customer service reps say that they'll pass it along but it goes nowhere lol.
On the other hand, we do track how many contacts we get about specific topics and pass that info up so if a lot of people reach out it may interest the decision makers to look into further.

Im not gunna get into it, but since the whole SA and cancel culture allegations came out a few years ago, i dont bring any girlfriend or girls to events anymore, including my own sister. Youre going to now have about a dozen random people going up to her and asking her if she feels ok, dude asking her how old I was while i wasnt near her. Yo if you have a girlfriend sadly you might not want to bring her to events lmfao, and they werent anything great to bring girls to in the first place. But its just rediculous and literally made her feel so uncomfortable she and my sister barely like going anymore. Its a bunch of dudes fronting with some some knight act for an excuse to like talk to her for like 10 seconds.

For one thing, I think that it's weak legal grounds to say that a company has control over broadcasting a game; at least one of competitive nature without showing story.
Secondly, even if they had that right, that would only be for broadcasting the game, not hosting a tournament surrounding it. I'm guessing that the event didn't want to run the tournament if they couldn't broadcast it though, since it was probably relying on a lot of sponsors to show ads in the broadcast.
However, I'd say they *don't* eve have the right to control broadcasting; it's fair use.

@Arche Ryan The issue is Tournaments already struggle to make money off Smash. Broadcasting is WHERE the money comes from.
You cant pay employees and pay for equipment and venues without that money. Its not like there are millions of dollars in the smash scene, they cant afford it without broadcasting rights.
If it was a small tournament maybe they could do that, but these tournaments are just too big to be able to afford that kinda sacrifice.

Okay, allow me to play Devils Advocate for a moment. Bearing in mind that I don't agree with Nintendo's decision to shutter the event, I do think that the Smash community are very quick to presume that Nintendo owes them the benefit of the doubt in these kinds of situations.

" in favour of a 20 year old game that's not going to make Nintendo any more money." The only reason Melee doesn't make Nintendo anymore money is because Nintendo refuses to sell it. Port the game to switch it will sell, especially to TO's who would only need a switch and TV to run both Melee and Ultimate events. Add online to Melee port and now Nintendo has more online subscribers. They have sold many games over and over by porting them to newer generations.

@Lucas McNamee If I may play Devil's Advocate here, the Smash Community doesn't 'just want to be left alone'. It wants to make use of Nintendo's IP in tournaments with cash prizes, that are monetized and that often display behaviour that's much more adult than Nintendo's target demographic, all while juxtaposed with some of Nintendo's most iconic characters and mascots. Call it like it is, what the Smash Community really wants is to form a niche industry that is easily mistaken for official Nintendo product, while they act in ways that are NOT conducive to Ninty's brand.
Like, my nephews love Smash, and their mum wouldn't know enough to know that something called the Smash World Tour isn't associated with Nintendo. She'd simply see Mario and Kirby alongside Leffen's toxicity, CONSTANT allegations of grooming and sexual misconduct and nope her kids out of that franchise in an instant. You talked further up this comment chain about the Smash Community bringing Nintendo good PR, but as someone who casually follows said community, I have NEVER encountered them making good PR for Nintendo. Its always grooming allegations, toxicity, picking fights and slandering the company on Twitter, showing up in Nintendo Directs to shriek about Smash and boo everything else... the only time I hear of the Smash community online is because of a scandal, or because they're openly calling Nintendo trash.
The 'Smash Community' seems absolutely radioactive and while I think Nintendo doesn't HELP the situations with their responses, I don't buy for a second that the Smash Community are some poor down trodden wretches who didn't do anything wrong. THEY dumpstered their own reputation and yet seem consistently outraged and confused when Nintendo, a company with a VERY typically Japanese culture, wants absolutely nothing to do with them and won't give them free rein to drag their IPs through an endless series of scandals.

I’m all aboard the fuck alan train (literally every other panda member is innocent here) but at the same time this is 95% Nintendo’s doing. I simply don’t see how one, primarily irrelevant man can convince Nintendo to flip from “we’re not cancelling events for not having licensing” to cancelling the biggest event of the year and any other event already announced by VGBC for not being licensed. Alan simply does not have that influence, regardless of the fact that Panda is partnered with Nintendo. The fact that Panda Cup didn’t get immediately cancelled after SWT for threatening other orgs tells me that Nintendo was lying to VGBC about either SWT having any chance of going through or about talking to Alan about his behavior. I think we need to wait and hear his statement on the matter before jumping to conclusions, unless we want another nairo situation on our hands

    • Joevent

What? Comparing this to the nairo situation is laughable. Nairo was proven to be flirting with an underage child, photographed with an underage boy on his lap, documented in the statements of countless pros who witnessed their relationship. Just because Nairo came out and said he was raped and literally provided zero evidence does not mean the situation was not his fault. This situation is in no comparison to the nairo situation

    • Kyallon
      Kyallon 2 개월 전 +2

@Joevent i mean the 5% is an exaggeration but still he couldn’t have had that much of an impact on the decision. Alans actions towards BTS in particular are awful but I can’t bring myself to take them seriously whenever alan tried to threaten a company way bigger than his own with a total shutdown when they hadn’t done anything worth getting C&D’s either. Nintendo partnering with him just doesn’t give him the authority to threaten anyone with a shutdown, and like i said before, if anything the fact that Nintendo let it slide is a better way bigger issue

    • Joevent
      Joevent 2 개월 전 +22

While I do agree with you that we should wait for his statement, current evidence is not looking too good for him. Nintendo sucks, we've always known that. That's why we support local scenes, VGBC, etc and that's why we don't bring ourselves down. Our common enemy was Nintendo so for Alan to reportedly (By numerous trustworthy people in the scene) threaten a shutdown of an event if they don't join the Panda cup, to demand broadcasting rights from Beyond The Summit, and to wield this partnership over our heads instead of with us, it FUCKING sucks. It's pretty clear that Alan made the information regarding VGBC being unlicensed more on the radar to Nintendo. So to say it's only 5% his doing isn't exactly fair imo.

That whole thing of going to event and telling them their competition is getting cancelled like that while in negotiations could be regarded as something like Tortious interference, which the Smash World Tour could serisouly launch a lawsuit for to recover damages. I kinda hope they do just to set a precedent that this sort of behavior for Touring groups like this shouldn't be premitted.

    • Firestorm2900 (Daishi)
      Firestorm2900 (Daishi) 2 개월 전 +15

@DekuFireMage The way I read it, part of this was going on BEFORE Panda made that announcement, so there's still interference partway at least
I'd also be a bit suspect on if they claimed the tournament was "illegal" since you don't need to be sponsored to do that. Illegitimacy, I'm not sure about that since Nintendo never interacted with the tournament scene, you can't make an argument very well one way or another very well. Unless you go off of what the community thinks?
I think the big kicker is their attempts to block SWT out of the market. I can recall how someone from Marvel did this same exact thing, and that now ex-Marvel employee got smacked HARD. That might be how to dispute this.

I am not in the smash community at all and I just want to clarify that I am many many steps removed from this situation, butttt isn't it just the broadcasting that they can shut down? like the obviously cant stop people from playing the game just people streaming it. they could still do events and just find different ways to monetize them without streaming. maybe even uploading videos a day or a week after the tournaments are over would get less backlash from Nintendo itself than having a live broadcast would. just a thought and maybe I have misunderstood entirely but it seems to me even if they are going to be harsh in the future that does not have to mean the end of the smash community.

The players, TOs, commentators/casters, management etc probably can’t openly speak out against the org yet. Otherwise they get themselves in even deeper water, which obviously isn’t good. They’re already up shit’s creek from being backstabbed by their boss. They don’t wanna do themselves in any deeper. Hell, not even the FGC Pandas are outright blasting Panda org atm this time, for that reason alone. They all still have their lives to think about, especially in a pressuring and precarious scenario like now.

@Randy Richardson What large company? Panda? They're an esports org, they're nothing near a large company. Honestly maybe several of the management team might have known about it, but you can't really deny the possibility that Alan could've acted alone without anyone else on the team knowing behind the scenes. Several people said Alan had been the one trying to manipulate and interfere and it wouldn't surprise me if no one else on the Panda team was aware of his actions. Who knows maybe someone else in Panda did know what was happening, we can't quite say one way or the other. I think you're naive to wave such a possibility away so quickly, but I have my opinion and you have yours. We have yet to hear from anyone from Panda that I'm at least aware of currently so we have no clear indication one way or the other. I personally don't want to try and assume a whole lot with the situation as is, so I'm not ruling these kinds of possibilities until we learn more. I would love to hear more of your thoughts though if you'd care to oblige me as to what more you meant if I at all misunderstood anything.

After it was announced that Melee won, Nintendo stepped in and prevented the game from being broadcast, possible even played, but I'm not sure on that one. The Internet came together and rebelled, and after just 4 hours, Nintendo rescinded their decision, which led to, imo, one of the best Melee tournaments I've ever seen, with an amazing top 8.

as someone who grinded Magic the Gathering events for a decade, we have 3 circuits (1 of which really is just WOTC official circuit) and there are direct and easily seen advantages and disadvantages to each one. LITERALLY ALL OF THEM not only co-exist, but some let topping results from one circuit count towards exclusive top cut events in others. this is good, and it has lead (up until wizards killed it recently in the past 2 years) magic the gathering to become the biggest and most popular TCG in the world. there have been similar controversies in that scene and looking at actual history of competitive grass roots events, this only leads to either part of the community being alienated and cut off, leaving the game forever, or someone better than you rising up. in this case, I doubt Nintendo is gonna let the latter happen.

    • Carlos Polk
      Carlos Polk 2 개월 전

@damandatwin like someone in Twitter and another YT’ers comments mentioned, it’s because they can, legally. They hold all the power to their IPs. So they’re well within their rights to say, “hey, stop broadcasting our game”. And from what I heard from others in YT and Twitter, Capcom let this get out of control in a big problem. Essentially them letting orgs broadcast/make tourneys of their games, without the proper licensing. And because of that, the FGC community in general has gotten away with so much in doing things the improper way. And that improper behavior spread like the plague. Again, this is just what I’ve heard, so idk how much truth there is to it, since I don’t know the specifics with capcom’s licensing requirements.

    • damandatwin
      damandatwin 2 개월 전 +8

Exactly, the SWT is its own thing. Yes the players are playing smash bros but why does Nintendo have the right to shut people down just because they're playing the game? It's not like watching a tournament stream is a replacement for playing the game, it's a totally different experience. And in terms of creativity/originality there is so much added by tournaments that are not part of the game itself and which IMO Nintendo has no business interfering with.

We’ll see. From what I heard from some on Twitter, they are contractually obligated to make an appearance and play as scheduled. So many have come up with the idea of stalling, footsies, etc. just make the tourney awful to watch lol
But while I do feel very bad for all the participants, I feel just as bad for the Panda players. I couldn’t imagine feeling blindsided from this betrayal from your own leader, someone you trust. And then to have to worry about your financial future too!? Nah, that’s depressing…

This is the reason why I moved over to Multiversus. Don't get me wrong however. I do love Smash but with all the drama happening for the past few years and Nintendo handling things for the wrong reasons, that's why I like Multiversus because they listen to the people, they're involved with the community and doesn't have much drama surrounding it

It is the classic two-faced persona. The CEO of Panda was known to be active even back in the early days of Melee, in Smashboards during mid-2000s. He slowly worked his way up through the community, forming his organization and sponsoring Smash players and Panda one of the few Smash-focused esports organizations out there. He is the classic from hard work and diligence bring success. He built up a positive reputation, clout, great PR and connections within and outside the community, namely Nintendo. Only to pull off this move, if everything stated is to be taken as fact.
That CEO's actions would not have been out of place in a history book of politics.

the issue isn't the people enjoying it. it's the hundreds of thousands of dollars lost, dozens of people losing their jobs. and the potential collapse of the smash bros melee scene.

Just throwing this out there since you mentioned it. If you were to organize a streamed charity event where all proceeds go to the charities represented by players, Nintendo would have to either enforce their terrible decision and blow this up even more or just let this all go. Either Nintendo gets more pushback or there’s a positive outcome all around.

There’s two sides to every story and I think we’re missing something here. My guess is that Nintendo as an organization is incredibly disorganized, and the person who made the decision to shut down swt was a higher-up. Perhaps there were some exclusive licensing issues, or Allen finessed Nintendo for exclusivity and Nintendo has a legal obligation to follow through on that contract. Japanese companies are known for being very opaque about behind the scenes situations, so my guess is that there is much more at play here than meets the eye.

If I remember correctly, Panda was in another controversy at one point in the Destiny 2 community during year 2 of the game (2018-2019). If my memory serves me right, it had something to do with boosting people in the Competitive PVP Playlist and DDOSing. A Playlist where if you reached the highest rank, you would be awarded with unquestionably the best gun in the game (mainly on console).
Needless to say this was incredibly hard. Only the best players in the game were (supposed to be) able to do this. Naturally, some people were paying so called 'carries' a lot of money to carry them to the highest rank to get this gun (and the clout). Panda also dove into this business. They had partnered streamers advertise the boosting service on their Twitch/YT. However, they were DDOSing people to get their carries to the highest rank to maximise profit. It would've otherwise taken them forever to just get one guy to the highest rank if doable at all.
Personally, I grinded to the highest rank 3 times during that year to get the coveted title that would be rewarded called Unbroken. Not only was this incredibly time consuming (don't recommend), but DDOSing near the top was incredibly common. It would happen once every like 3-4 games near the end of a season. Also legitimately carrying was incredibly hard. Essentially playing 3 vs 4 at the high ranks meant you would get stomped by the stacked teams at the top. I never ran into people that would win a 3 vs 4 against my team during my time ranking.
