HBO Max decided to dive into the adult animation arena with VELMA, the Scooby Doo spinoff from Mindy Kaling. Despite negative reviews from pretty much everyone, the show seems to be the talk of the Internet. Or maybe that’s because of them…
Velma definitely raises some questions. Like where’s Scooby Doo in the Scooby Doo show? Why is every single character just a completely different person than the character they’re based on? Why is everyone so mean? Why does everyone love Velma? Why are they trying so hard to be snarky and meta?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Velma.

lol Velma had a pre-authorized number of episodes that were then deemed to be split across multiple seasons. season 2 wasn't authorized after publishing the first season. i only learned this about a week ago. it's okay to hate-watch.

Mindy Kahling (spelling?) made the show because she found Velma to be extremely relatable. She immediately changed everything about the character.

She loved to brag about how much she identified with Velma, and how Velma wasn't tied to her whiteness as a character...so she raceswapped her and mutated the character into the same, tired, boring, appalling self-insert Mindy always plays in every role she's ever had.
Disclaimer: I don't object to raceswapping out of hand, but when Mindy out and out admits as above there wasn't really a reason to do it beyond an utterly superficial selfish choice because Mindy is that colour and Mindy is more important than Velma...why do it?

It's like she plucked the good + interesting bits about Velma and applied the most bitter interpretation of them:
Velma is smart (everyone else is stupid/shallow).
Velma can be underappreciated (everyone should adore Velma b/c she's way better than them).
Velma is clever and kinda sassy (she knows everything and has fun using her knowledge to make people feel bad/dumb). Etc etc etc.

@Francisco Ramirez Let's think about old TV and its shows...
Maybe at the time of your parents or grandparents childhood people sat in front of their big-furniture-small-screen devices to watch to their shows in an almost color blunt - if not "black and white" - valved bubbled glass display with bad signal full of interference coming only from air antenas (which most of the time consisted in two alloy sticks "glued" to a wire attached into the ancient audio & video hardware - guess we aren't breaking any electronics rule calling that "hardware" - inside the same room where the TV was).
The intro scene of "Blankman" with Damon Wayans where he and the other kid try to watch an episode of a classic Batman show depicts it partially for who needs a more explicit example (that shit happened a lot, boys)...
People with less money used to watch to P&B TV until a much reccent present than most millenials can think. I myself lived a bit of the drama i'm trying to describe here, with my grand mother having an old P&B CRT in her living room to watch journal, cooking shows and local soap operas until some point in the mid of 90ies.
Back at these days content producers needed to be very picky with their works. Even a white actor/actress could be just a stain on some screens since theres absolutelly no deffinition at the time, even if compared to what SD TVs was in the late 90ies. I remember to think the pop queen Madonna had took a bath with bleach cause saw her so white (skin and hair) than YT classic layout BG sometimes.
Things got even worse with black people, and worser when they tried to put a black guy besides of a white guy in the same cut as happens in "MIB" or "Rush Hour" movies (and these are pretty reccent examples in a time where things was already working MUCH better).
If you was running a movie with black people, light and makeup needed to be adjusted to that skin tone; Michael Jackson, that still had a dark toned skin when performed the "Moonwalker" movie, looked more white at the time due to movie production. Same goes fot whities as said in the Madonna case. Both usually turns to be a big mess and more costy work - Stallone's "Demolition Man"? Snipes looked a pit black shadow with yellow hair on most of his scenes first time i saw that (true to the villaneous character he was doing, but not so right or even intended for the ocasion).
Enough examples and going back to our old favourites 70ies cartoons: were William Hanna e Joseph Barbera racists, so made so much cartoons full of light skinned characters and little to no representativitie of other human races scattered around the globe? Who am i to say it is or not; but as Stan Lee and CIA with Marvel Comics, Hannah-Barbera's looks just to be practical with the resourses they had at that time.
As stated before, theres no such thing as "High Definition Resolution" even at master copies of big budget movies for theatrical exhibitions and, speaking about TV. when people even had colors at home, it looked blunt, flat, blurry and meshed.
Mesh was a technique used until reccently BTW. Still present into pretty recent multimedia players and video game consoles as "Xbox 360" and "PlayStation 3", making them able to output the best image in the not so best displays available through the "interlaced" format - as in "480i", which consists of two frames formed by 240 vertical lines of pixels alternating to form a single 480 lines of vertical pixels image; same for "1080i", that even some latter PS2 games could nativelly achieve if supplied with the neccessary hardware, which is the meshing of 2 frames of about 640 lines interlacing to provide more smooth and defined frames.
So, at some point in 69 - or before since things used to took more time to release back in the day - a genious came with this idea of a cartoon show starring a scared dog and his human friends solvind misteries in a kinda spooky theme environment (for the time).
Did you realized that any of the original 5 members of the Scooby gang has a unique shape and "wears" contrast color? Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, Velma and Fred are respectively brown, green, purple, orange and white. being, besides the dog, a "sloppy"(?) young guy, a "pretty girl", a shorty nerdish girl and an athletic guy. No repeating shapes and tones there other than human skins. That has to do with visual identity and easy recognition of the characters on screen, even if spectators was watching with that so common bad signal in their ol'blurry TVs.
Today most of it could be easily forgot due to our tech being able to show every single fiber in the character cloth, like was done in the reccent "Scooby!" movie, where Shaggy comment about Blue Falcon "scales" in the hero's new suit (before he reveal that he is just the son of the original Falcon), but in a simpler times, this matters A LOT.
But you should be screaming "you still babbling about anything other than all medling kinds in the show being depicted as white", right? Guess we already settled the floor for this now - and if you are smart enough, you already catch what will be said in the air at this point.
People used to be white in these cartoons - "Scooby-Doo" show included - because the color spectrum that most displays were able to show back in the day was... TAN DAN DAHN! (dramatic pause)... limited! So they couldn't depict Daphne as a gorgeous dark toned model or even Fred as rough blackened football player without giving them a color too much similar as the one used on animal characters as Sooby itself or even Yogi Bear and other ones.
Just think about the messy thing would be Shaggy, with all the "stoner" fame the character got in the bad mouths with time, depicted similar to the mascot of the series... THAT would be REALLY wrong!
"But, uncle Aaron, it's clear that one is a dog and other a person"
Maybe it's clear FOR US today, but don't forget about the bad signals full of interference in the less-than-SD displays as depicted in the baldy's movie i have mentioned before; old TV shows needed to stablish a few standards to not mess with its audience perception - due to VERY low resolutions too - and believe, "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "Everybody Hates Chris" after that was in another level if compared to a not so older show like "Diff'rent Strokes" when all of them are watched even in a late 90ies CRT (Arnold and Willis where so black than "Addam's Family"' Wednesday's dress in my memories of this show that i never would knew their face acting jokes if wasn't for streaming reprises we can do today with internet in HD displays), plus: Scooby could be the only pet in most episodes of his show, but theres others like the aforementioned Yogi Bear, Atom Ant or even Disney and WB cartoons with Mickey's troop and Bugs Bunny crew, where almost anthropomorfic animals runs their looney adventures, being them from all colors but the cream tone used in the few human-like characters present almost every time in these shows (with very little exceptions), but these humans where never colored with a different color like blue if not to depict something specific, like a monster or something.
So that (all of that maybe) should explain "a little" for who spend the time talking about "whitey only shows" here and "social racism" there without ANY substance.

    • Okay ImSorry
      Okay ImSorry 25 일 전 +1

@Francisco Ramirez You make a valid point. It does work better there. It was a weak analogy. I also agree that it differentiates itself by being the Velma show, even granting that I still feel that the respect for the characters isn't there. Scooby Doo isn't there because whoever owns the rights didn't allow for the character of Scooby-Doo to be associated with this project. Also, in making "The Velma Show" they've offered a new take on Velma that isn't just inconsistent with the original Velma, it's completely different. The original Velma was stoic but intelligent. She was the one who came in at the end of the show and let us know who was actually guilty, which clues led to the conclusion, and the motive that led to the crime. The new Velma attempts to do the same thing, but lacks all the stoicism and clarity of mind that defined the character. Fred and Daphne have been reduced to parodies of rich and entitled white people, whether it's Fred the spoiled manlet or Daphne the drug dealing valley girl. Shaggy got race swapped too, because he's also supposed to be likable in the context of the show.
The show doesn't try to remain consistent in any identifiable way. Not caring is fine, but irrelevant. I'm here to explain why I feel that they've taken something I appreciated, cared about, and learned from. The only reason I'm willing to argue on this with someone who doesn't care is that you may not care about this specific issue, but the mentality behind this situation predicts a future where nothing is sacred and eventually someone does touch on something that matters to you. Eventually this attitude will be applied to a piece of art that you consider sacred.

    • Francisco Ramirez
      Francisco Ramirez 25 일 전

@Okay ImSorry I don't know if the Mona Lisa is the original or not but if you create a new one with a different race the one in the museum should remain like it is, youe comparison would work better if for example Scooby Doo Where are you? Becames lost media because Warner fully got rid of it, but then they released a new versión of the show with the characters gender swap.
In Velma's case it is just the Velma show, SD WAY?, Mistery Inc, etc will remain the same, you can go watch them if they are available, I don't get why people act as if the present erased the past...

    • Okay ImSorry
      Okay ImSorry 25 일 전 +3

@Francisco Ramirez Again, "I don't care so it's not a problem" does not address the arguments people are making here. Not only that, but if you have no stake in the argument than your participation can only serve to frustrate those who do.
The problem with your logic is built into what you're saying. If the characters and the show itself have no value to you, than you are the last person on earth (next to mindy kaling, apparently) who should play a role in defining the future of the show. Whether or not you may have appreciated parts of it here or there, its unlikely you have the respect or appreciation for the I.P, themes, and characters that the people who love it do.
Another point on this issue is if we apply this to a different medium. I might think the Mona Lisa would be better if Mona Lisa was depicted as an asian woman, so why don't they just let me go into the louvre and clumsily alter the color of her skin? We can copy the original painting and have been able to do so for years. So if nothing is sacred about the original art, than why shouldn't anyone with a box of crayons be set loose on it? Does it matter if not everyone cares?

@Mlw That's what I'm saying. It's why I said "in a vacuum". If this were a company or business I knew absolutely nothing about, and someone showed me work they've done for decades and the work they've done in recent years that was comparable to Hollywoods work, I would absolutely assume either the company was trying to fail, or that they have some of the least qualified people in existence in every important position in the company.
The fact I know the former isn't true (they like money too much) and the latter is, at best, only somewhat true, leaves me without any possible explanation.

    • The Rotten💯
      The Rotten💯 개월 전

@Mlw While I fully agree it goes back that far, at least Twilight makes sense...I could wrap my head around how it would be a low-effort cash cow for the studios to rake in the adolescent girl dollars. Starting around 2015 is when decisions started making absolutely no sense in any metric.
In a vacuum, if I didn't know anything about the industry and was shown the change in the type of product they started releasing around that time, I'd 100% have said they were looking to sabotage their studios and the industry in general, because that's the only thing that would make sense.
It's like if a local bakery decided to start using salt instead of sugar in everything they made, there would only be one reason to do that; to ruin their name and drive people away. Maybe the IRS was about to seize control of their bakery and they wanted to ensure it was in bad a shape as possible prior to that, who knows, but the fact they were looking to drive people away would be obvious.
That's been Hollywould in recent years.

    • Mlw
      Mlw 개월 전

@The Rotten💯 well actually I’ve actually been aware of the crap Hollywood has been turning out since like 08 w Twilight. That for me was the beginning of the end. Nothing nowadays is “amazing” (obviously there are outliers HOTD, most of GOT, BB just to name a few) but w most shows I set my expectations to nothing and when you do that nothing is truly terrible. Like w the Velma show I just finished it and it was fine I haven’t thought about it since. It “just was” if that makes sense

    • The Rotten💯
      The Rotten💯 개월 전

@Mlw You're absolutely right. Some of us have taste and minimal standards. If I'm being completely honest, I'm jealous in a way that you don't seem to. It would surely have made the last 5-10 years of the lowest common denominator garbage from Hollywood at least bearable if not enjoyable.
I want to ask if there's a trick to it, but I realize you probably already think I'm patronizing and insincere.

Problem with relying on hatewatching is, while on 1st episode you indeed get lots of people wanting to see if it's really that bad, once they realise show is as bad as they heard, there's no one around left to watch 2nd episode. And because you already declared success and did victory lap, you can't just sweep it under the rug.

@Tone Rivera Other than KRcliprs getting ad revenue, none of us are getting paid to tell the truth. Velma is a self insert, and Fred went from the "woke" stereotype against white people to being a stereotypical woke white person.
And Shaggy is still most of the negative black stereotypes, save "ebonics" and being abusive to women, and they race swapped him to black. Why not do it to Fred? Making Fred black wouldn't be racist (though I wouldn't do the Wesley Snipes blind thing) but they do that instead.

Pointing out or validly asking why a character's race was switched from their original is not demeaning or derogatory, especially when no one can deliver a valid answer. Velma's character is demeaned because of her abrasive and selfish personality, especially when you compare her to the original character. Taking a classic show with wholesome messages and values for our youth and transforming it into the god forsaken excrement that Hollywood's released from the inner depth of its bowels says a lot about how today's screenwriters feel our youth should think and act.

If a lot of people "hate watching" season one is what prompted them to do season 2, then we need to try "not watching" instead. That's what I did after the first episode. It was only meant to be someone's narcissistic passion project. They think hate is like, so by hating on what we loved as kids, they believe that we'll love what they love instead. These projects needed to have been shot down as pitch ideas. Not made in full. This is what happens when they don't appreciate the source material like Willow, Rings of Power, and soon The Witcher.

Thank you for pointing out how the meta "jokes" aren't even jokes, but statements.

I'm crying because I just told my family that I may not live through the week. Thank you, Ryan George. Binge watching helps someone through their biggest nightmares. Never stop.

Pitch meeting is the best review channel there is.. I was so sick of the same old review routine. Someone just sitting there and talking about the movie over explaining every feeling they had about it....pitch meeting explains the movie in a unique way.and you can tell is he thinks it was good or bad by how sarcastic and how harsh the jokes are but always light hearted and funny.
