My Video Went Viral. Here's Why

소스 코드
  • 게시일 2019. 05. 19.
  • My hypothesis is that the algorithm, rather than viewer preference, drives views on the site. As the algorithm shifts, various KRcliprs experience burnout (as what used to work no longer works) and right now click-through rate is the key metric. So clickable titles and thumbnails are the only way to get a lot of impressions and hence views - they are the only way to go viral. This leads me to wonder which audiences will become most prevalent on the site and if there will even be a place for educational content. In the long-term, hopefully KRclip is able to measure satisfaction through surveys and other metrics to ensure an optimal experience for everyone on the site.

Well, I think you have already solved the problem without(?) knowing ;) :
"Here's Why" is subtly says "I'll tell you How to make Your videos viral"... which is a clickbait for the real core of the video (which I think is the last 4 minutes).
So: great thumbnails. good quality videos on topics that maybe people didn't even imagine that they would appreciate, as long as they finish watching thinking "Wow... I'd never have thought/known/investigated of that if I hadn't seen this"

The type of channels that benefit the most from click-through-rate are kids channels, simply because a 10 year isn't going to have as many interests as a 30 year old. Less interests = Less subs = higher % of videos watched from each sub = higher click-through-rate. Little kids also have a lot more free time to watch YT videos.

  • Randy Randalman
    Randy Randalman 일 전

While the changes in the algorithm do make KRclip a bit unreliable, the one reliable thing is the viewer. Viewers want to be entertained and the algorithm will give it to them. Also the # of creators and videos is only going to grow, so naturally the quality of the videos have to keep pace. Before, we watched your video because you were better than most creators. Now, we watch your video because the video itself looks interesting. I sub to over 100 channels. Like I want to stay subed for support, but at a certain point you gotta cut bait on some. And since watch time is still a big part of the equation, I don't think we're going back to 2013 level of KRclip clickbait.

I do not ring the bell. But sometimes I get back to my favorite subscribers and catch up by watching every single video I mised. The problem with subscriptions is that I really don't want to watch all videos of all channels I "save". I really could use two buttons - subscribe and bookmark. Bookmark for the ones I don't want to loose, subscribe for the ones that I would watch at least 70% of the content.

I avoided the shade balls video for months because of the clickbaity title pushed me away from it. Finally I saw the video because it was recommended for me again and again. It was an OK Veritasium video. And I'm a bit annoyed by the fact that earlier it was easier for me to predict the content of a Veritasium video. And I'm a loyal fan, I watch every one of them. Always. Except that clickbaity one. I don't hate the player, I hate the game.

The best way for the algorithm to work is to measure number of likes per views and push that content, it's also the simplest....

    • Drproflang
      Drproflang 20 시간 전 +1

John Coakley yes I would also like to know that, but maybe it is just the amount of time watched. But I think it is a mix of many many parameters. The KRclip „Algorithm“ is actually not an algorithm, but an artificial neural network, a very advanced AI that has many input parameters and output parameters which learns by itself (you will find videos on KRclip explaining that in more detail). The people from KRclip can therefore not even know or control how the „algorithm“ works.

    • JP Superstar
      JP Superstar 20 시간 전

@Drproflang Ya, I suppose there would be a lot more giveaways for likes in that scenario...don't know if that's exactly terrible but it's definitely not perfect. Clear something up for me though, this View Time metric, is that like amount of time in minutes/hours that people have watched (e.g. people have watch 100 hours of KRcliprs videos) or is it Relative View Time (e.g. people have watched 90-100% of a certain video) because I would be ok with Relative View Time. That would at least indicate that people were interested enough to watch most/all of the video. And would stop youtubers making extra long videos just to boost view time...

    • Drproflang
      Drproflang 일 전

John Coakley but some people say in their videos: please like, and others say: if you like the video, you enter a contest to win something. So I don‘t think that a like per view ratio is a good thing to do...

It is because the KRclip contents are too broad right? But what if it highlights more about the category that it has. Besides the KRclip homepage, KRclip actually has many categorical homepages like KRclip Gaming, KRclip Education, but those pages still less recognizable. What if KRclip could attract more people to visit those pages or maybe increase the recognizability? Could it make the competition fairer? I could imagine that the content creators would compete to satisfy their genre algorithm instead of following the trends and KRclip could add more metrics for different categories that more suitable to the category than generalizing all of them. Just my thoughts though, what do you think?

For the first time last year, I attended a KRclip meetup in London. I kid you not, for the entire hour I sat there, all they talked about was "the algorithm".
Over an hour in, someone finally asked "who's on KRclip for fun?" and only myself and one other put our hands up.
I was and still am so disappointed and sad. The community and culture has grossly changed. And I don't blame them, I totally understand it...
KRclip has turned into an entertainment platform, rather than a creative one.
KRclip prioritizes audiences over creators - because audience brings advertising and advertising brings $$$.
What ends up happening? People are making videos for their audience, not for themselves. And as you've so greatly presented and summarised, this is why many "content creators" are sadly burning out.

No doubt your videos have the content which will last for ever. I wish KRclip find some mechanism to identify and parameterize such contents so that they have certain priority to come above/top. If they are not doing so, soon it is going to become a junk yard. ...

Maybe rather than having one whole audience, form an algorithm that can change for different viewer types. I have a select few creators that I want to see all content from. Some (probably most) people use it to find the newest sensational videos. The current algorithm seems to be geared for the latter, as that's where the money will be made for KRclip. That being said, I think most of the complaints are coming from the slower paced folks like myself, who want a consistent experience when getting on the platform.
Maybe an algorithm can use more metrics to determine suggestions for an individual, and then increase viewer retention and satisfaction for more people rather than only going for the majority.

You left off something important at the end. The difference between the clear bell and the filled in black bell. The clear bell only showed subscribers some of your videos. The filled in bell shows all videos to that subscriber.

  • EozTheNew
    EozTheNew 7 일 전

The bell gives me a desktop notification every time a new video is uploaded, yes? That's not what I want. What I want is a list, in reverse chronological order (newest to oldest) of all videos uploaded by all the channels I'm subscribed to. This already exists: KRclip URL /feed/subscriptions and now I've checked the channels individually to confirm, 100% of their videos end up on my subscription feed. NOT the front page, which is defined by algorithms, but the reverse chronological subscription feed.
If we want to change how KRclip operates for the better, stop using the front page! Start doing the hard work, as viewers, and actually search for videos, give every video a fair chance whether it has 5 views or 5 million views. Sticking only to the popular videos forces KRclip to change things up through the algorithm, which in turn encourages content creators to "game" the algorithm, which makes the experience more frustrating and less transparent for viewers.

There is one other way besides the bell. Be a selective viewer. By now, the algorithm has learned that some viewers are less reachable by clickbait. Every Veritasium video is suggested to me, because it is one of the few things I will watch. Be a selective viewer, and KRclip will release you from clickbait prison. A few years ago, I would ignore entire screens of thumbnails and type in searches, trying to think of less common names for things I enjoy. For example, I would type holography instead of hologram. The algorithm pretty much just shows me my subscriptions now, and suggests new channels.
