- In this first episode I show you how I enter North Korea for the New Year's Eve tour. My journey starts in South Korea and it takes about 30 hours to go through China to Pyongyang by train.

60년대같은데…평양 외 다른 곳 풍경 봐봐라…전기도 안 들어오고 소 끌고다니고 평양 조차도 서울이 7080년대엔 저딴곳이랑 비교도 안되게 많이 발전한데다 호텔도 많았음
남한에 살면서도 나보다 잘 사는 사람들 보고 항상 배 아파했는데 여기 산다는거 자체가 축복인것 같네 진짜..

This is a literally incredible documentary. I feel like I had an adventurous tour in North Korea. Thanks for your amazing videos.
That broken bridge reminds me of a very similar bridge (at Dömitz) that used to connect West and East Germany and was bombed during WW2. They left the ruins and only after reunification a new bridge was built. The old one is still there
2년 전 중국 여행에서 단동 갔을 때 철교에서 신의주를 한참동안 보고만 있었던 기억이 납니다...... 우리나라에서 북한 국경을 보는 것과는 사뭇 다른 감정을 느꼈었는데 기차를 타고 국경을 넘는 장면을 보니 기분이 더 묘하네요
아마 저는 평생 그 국경을 합법적으로는 못 넘겠죠.....

@mrfolider Probably more comfortably than nomadic hunter gatherers. They have permanent homes and access to basic amenities. Yes there is a lack of luxuries and yes they are brainwashed. But I’m not here to argue politics about their government leadership. I’m just talking about the basic semi-modern civilized lifestyle versus nomadic tribalism. Both of these lifestyles are better for the environment than modern urbanization. But of the two, a basic semi-modern lifestyle is more comfortable

I think you said that you wanted to try living somewhere new, but I was wondering why you chose South Korea out of many countries in the world. And also the stereotypes about Korea you had before coming here (or stereotypes that other foreigners around you typically have about Korea), and the stereotypes that you as a foreigner face from South Koreans.

This so much reminds me of my first solo independent tour of China over 30 years ago. Thanks for making this. Back then I only had a mechanical 35mm film camera, and you only took a few blurry photos a week!

honestly probably better than today where we take 40 pictures of the same thing to get the 'right' angle and wind up missing everything and not taking it all in (being present)
They were not supposed to be blurry, if you knew HOW to use the camera 😂
My heart was pounding throughout the whole video lol. This seems like such a thrilling experience, as long as you abide by their laws they have no reason to harm you I guess.

To be honest I thought of North Korea as a nation that lives in a traditional life style while in the South everyone pretty much live in the urban style cities.

실제로 탈북하신 분들 여러명과 대화할 기회가 있었어요. 농민도 계셨고, 김일성대학을 졸업하신 분도 계셨습니다. 그분들께 직접 들은 북한의 실상은 참담합니다. 굶는 날은 다반사이며 특히 고난의 행군 시절에는 매일 집집마다 사람들이 죽어나갔다고 합니다. 와중에 세뇌를 당했기 때문에 조국에 대한 충성이 엄청납니다. 아무리 친한 친구라도 나라에 대해서 조금만 불만을 털어놓는다면 밀고를 당해서 소리소문없이 사라진다고 합니다. 참.... 국민들은 무슨 잘못이라고 그렇게 힘들게 살아야하는지.....

North Korea looks amazing I love it's quiet feel the rural life with the bicycles and farm animals it's modesty it's stark dryness in the winter with the occasional flashes of bright buildings or clothes ,very beautiful place .reminds me a bit of some places in Nepal but obviously not as mountainous and not as colourful.strangly a very beautiful place.Thank you .it sounds like you received wonderful hospitality ,so lucky to meet the actor of the movie .I was thinking I have memorized most of the new testament and know alot of the old by heart ,but my Korean is not so good ,I think that could be the only way around getting the Bible in . thankfully the good news can be communicated in two sentences .this was excellent thank you so much .

I'm almost sure that for telling good news especially as a foreigner you would be instantly departed. If you would be native north korean it is hard to imagine what bad things they would do to you.

우와 진짜 기차타고 지나가는 모든 풍경들이 다 인상깊어요. 강 하나 두고 대조되는 풍경들과, 교과서에 실린 문학책을 떠오르게 하는 70년대 한국같은 풍경들, 우리나라에선 거의 관광지에만 존재하는 한옥촌까지.. 이 모습들을 보는데 왜인진 모르겠지만 눈물 날 것 같았어요. 강화도에서 망원경으로 실제 북한인들 모습을 본 적이 있는데, 그 때 봤던 풍경들이랑 정말 똑같아요. 대부분이 자전거 타고 다니고.. 단동에서 신의주로 넘어가는 순간에 저도 이입해서 만약 정말 내가 저 상황을 경험하게 되면 얼마나 새로울까.. 궁금해졌네요.. 영상 잘 봤습니다!!

Bart can you tell me the lyrics to that song that is so catchy and so commonly heard in DPRK? If you speak Korean, I'd also love to understand the best possible translation for the lyrics into English. I get this darn song stuck in my head all the time, but I have NO CLUE what it is saying or how to pronounc the words, so I just make up some non-words of my own or hum / clap / dance along! 😂
As Korean. It is quite bizarre and weird that i'm watching this in South Korea which is (geographically) the closest country to North Korea. 지정학적으로 가장 가까운 나라인 대한민국에서 이 동영상을 보니 감회가 새롭네요.

It would be so great to see Korea re-unite like Germany did.
If reunification would have to happen, people from North Korea have to uprise together against the regime. Hoping that someday, there will be someone from North Korea who is able to see the light and guide others through the darkness.

수학여행으로 저 강을 배로 달렷던 기억이 나는데 반대편 북한에 군인들이나 저 놀이기구
들을 봤어요 . 궁금하고 가까이서 보기를 원했죠 근데 이영상을 통해 추억을 다시 느끼고
그때의 친구들과 찍은사진들도 다시 보게되었어요 ㅠㅠ 이영상은 오랫동안 두고 보고싶어용
To be honest, i expected North Korea to be much blander and emptier....it's actually quite pretty, the houses are all multicoloured and there's mountains too. I was shocked as i had never thought about how it looked, so it was really nice to see it on KRclip like this
But about everything else that goes on/went there, i will refrain from saying anything about it

Alexa yeah, i mean i am aware that most people don't live in those houses but rather in smaller houses that are closer to their fields.
Suman Ali they only show the best parts of course. This is only how the elite lives. A normal north korean doesn’t see those buildings.
Even with the sanctions and the international pressure it faces North Korea seems to be doing pretty well , it's such a neat clean place and at least the capital city Pyongyang looks first world in most aspects.

9:32 when the guy walking his horse waves to the train. That just broke my heart. Because looking at the way he lives and walking his horse down the road, my instinctual answer says he probably can’t afford to leave or have a job that will offer him to ever leave. So seeing that he waved at the people passing by who do get to travel made me kind of sad. I am so fascinated by North Korea and could watch short films about them all day honestly. Well done.

보여지는건 평온해 보이지만 보이지 않는 수용소 같은 곳에서 인간으로써는 상상도 못할 박해와 고통속에서 죽어가는 동포들을 생각하면 북녘땅은 그저 슬픔의 땅입니다.
그냥 눈물이남 전세계 많은나라중 왜 우리민족이 반으로 갈려 수십년의 세월을 보내고 서로 만날 수가 없는지...... 외국인들은 저리 자유롭게 가는데... 영상 잘 봤습니다.

The first song that we can listen to at the beginning of the video is "Yong Jin Ga,," which was a song for an army for national independence. The song was adopted/modified by "Jeonju Shinheung High school" and has been used for the school song.

Great video Bart 👍 I would love to see it myself in real someday, but somehow after the story of Otto Warmbier (and of course many other innocent people) I’m not so sure I would take the risk (even though I would comply to their rules). To see the country and speak to local people must be a great experience though!
